Robert Sherman's Sports Yoga: Body Wisdom
(Gin Miller Fitness)
2001
What is it?
A half-hour Yoga session geared towards athletes. Who is it for? Yoga beginners who are more interested in getting solid physical results from a Yoga practice than they are about terminology and philosophy. What to expect: Are you more focused on sports and athletics than you are on searching for a serene lifestyle? Robert Sherman may be the Yoga instructor for you. Sherman is a Reebok University Master Trainer and he won't bog you down with Sanskrit words or New Age speak. His practice is grounded in practical concerns such as building functional strength and flexibility and enhancing sports performance. This introduction to Yoga is basic, but not necessarily easy. In fact, if your muscles have been tightened up by years of athletics, you'll undoubtedly find quite a few of these moves challenging. You'll also discover how functional flexibility can add fluidity to your movements. Sherman concentrates on teaching you the moves, but doesn't bother naming them; Downward Facing Dog, for example, is merely referred to as an "inverted V." Those who have tried other Yoga videos will find that Sherman offers up a few poses, and variations on poses that you may not have seen before - it's certainly not the same, old beginning Yoga tape. If you plan to have Yoga as the centerpiece of your lifestyle and exercise program, Sherman probably doesn't offer what you're looking for - he doesn't discuss philosophy or Yoga's emotional benefits. But if you're looking for deep flexibility and strength work that will compliment your other activities, then you will find that Body Wisdom has a lot to offer.
