Pilates Workout for Dummies
(Anchor Bay)
2001
What is it?
A Pilates video for beginners. The DVD contains both a beginners and an intermediates program. Who is it for? Beginners, even complete novices, will love either the video or DVD. Those with more experience will enjoy the DVD, but may find the video too basic. What to expect: This is one of the best exercise videos in the Dummies series, and a great introduction to Pilates. With Pilates, form is everything, and Michelle Dozois' instruction is as precise as her moves. She also has a friendly, non-intimidating presence that is encouraging without being cloying or overly peppy. This video is very no-frills - it was shot simply in an unadorned studio, and Dozois is alone - there are no other exercisers. Actually, that's the only downside of this video - the modifications are shown separately, generally partway through each move. It would have been better to show someone performing the modifications right alongside Dozois. The video contains a half-hour workout consisting of 19 different moves. In addition to the basic program, the DVD also offers a good intermediate's session - you get two workouts on one disc, making it a better buy if you have DVD capabilities. While beginners who use the video regularly may outgrow it within a few weeks or a couple of months, the DVD with its expanded number of exercises is good for the long-term.
