Unleashing the Athlete With Zen: Joint Freeing Functional Fitness
(Leigh Crews-Dynalife)
2003
What is it?
A DVD containing a 35-minute, Yoga-inspired workout, accompanied by a 45-minute instruction sequence. Leigh Crews is the instructor. Who is it for? All levels of exercisers - you don't need to be an athlete to benefit. Obviously, if you have Yoga experience and some lower body strength, this will be a lot easier for you, but beginners will have a lot to work with - the moves will build strength and flexibility for them. The instructional section is geared towards both the fitness enthusiast and professional trainers. What to expect: With most Yoga and Yoga-based workouts, the instructions about form happen during the workout. If you're fortunate, the instructor will spend ten minutes before the actual routine to explain how to properly do the poses. Leigh Crews has set this DVD up differently - she spends a full 45 minutes explaining each move in detail and using a model to illustrate, often showing both front and side views of the poses. After viewing and practicing the instructional segment, the actual workout feels like familiar terrain, which makes it much easier to accomplish in good form, even the first time you do it. Crews' style isn't your typical Sun Salutation, standing and sitting poses. She adds some unique twists, such as adding a low, small lunge that's an excellent lower body strengthener, and a shoulder rotation exercise done while in Child's Pose that will prove challenging for most people. While this is not a difficult routine to accomplish, it will definitely make you work - which also means it will very likely bring you some good results in adding flexibility and strength.
