Kathy Smith: Functionally Fit - Peak Fat Burning
(Bodyvision)
1996
What is it?
40 minutes of cardio intervals that also offer a pretty decent lower body workout. Who is it for? Advanced beginning to intermediate exercisers. The choreography is easy, so it's especially good for the dance-challenged. What to expect: Kathy Smith is one of the most dependable instructors when it comes to the quality of her exercise videos, and Peak Fat Burning is a favorite amongst her fans. At 40 minutes it's not too long, and not a moment is wasted. After a lively 7-minute warm-up, Smith gets started on 25 minutes of aerobic/ anaerobic intervals - 2 minutes' worth of easy-to-learn, high-energy routines that get your heart pumping, alternated with a couple minutes' worth of recovery. But while your heart and lungs are getting back to normal, Smith is working your thighs and butt with a series of squats, plies and lunges. Then, just when your heart rate has eased up a bit, you get to do it all over again. There are six intervals, after which you'll be ready for the quick cool down and solid, 5-minute stretch. Smith's personality is part of what makes this video so good - she's upbeat and friendly without being chirpy and her cueing is excellent. Peak Fat Burning is a tape that most exercisers will be able to use for a long time. There are low-impact alternatives for those just starting out or who don't want to jump (you may not get your heart rate up high enough with this alternative, however). Those who master the tape and want more can always rewind and do one or two of the intervals a second time (yes, some people actually do this!). Overall, it's one of the better aerobic tapes available. Highly recommended. To Order Functionally Fit - Peak Fat Burning on DVD
