There's a little bit of magic in writing things down. Write down your goals and they
become just that much more real; write down your experiences and they become markers in your life.
That's why a workout log does wonders for your exercise program. By keeping track of which activities
you are doing, and when, you keep track of your progress. You don't have to wrack your brain trying
to remember which leg exercises you did and how many reps, or the total mileage you ran last week.
It's all laid out before you. As you progress over time, you'll find it encouraging flipping through
your workout log and seeing how far you've come.
A basic workout log lists the exercises, reps and weight you have completed for your daily workout, if you're doing strength training or the time and/or mileage if you're doing a cardio workout. They can also be tailored to your particular sport or activity. You can add more details, such as heart rate, perceived exertion, speed, and whether you were using a special technique. In addition you can comment on how you felt about that particular day's workout - if you had more or less energy than normal, if you topped your previous efforts or you can record your emotions about the exercise in general. Keeping a workout log keeps you motivated. If you've written down your goals in the log, you'll have a daily reminder of why you keep up your efforts. If you've decided to commit yourself to a fitness program, you'll be far more likely to stick to it over the long haul if you keep a workout log.
