A strap is one of those things that you don't think about much unless you need it and
it's not within your grasp. In Yoga, straps are often used to facilitate Asanas like
Supta Padangusthasana and
Gomukhasana.
Sometimes a teacher uses them in class in conjunction with other props such as a
backless metal chair. Straps are also helpful in traditional
stretching routines when your arms can't reach as far as you need, or to give a gentle, extra pull to
a muscle group. No matter what you do for exercise, it's important to keep muscles flexible, and if
you're serious about stretching, you may want to have at least a couple different straps. Your basic
