The most popular form of exercise is simply walking. Statistics show that people who start a walking program are more likely to stick to it than any other form of exercise. Walking for 20 minutes to half an hour on most days is enough to make an improvement in your cardiovascular health, but have you ever wondered how many steps you should take overall in a day? Research from the Cooper Institute for Aerobic Research says that to meet the Surgeon General's recommended amount of physical activity, you should take an average of 10,000 steps every day (this includes walking around the office, grocery shopping and other everyday activities in addition to regular fitness walks). The problem is that Americans typically only take somewhere between 3,000 and 5,000 steps.

At the end of the day it will tell you if you've met the 10,000-step quotient. If you haven't, there are various ways you can fix that - by taking short walks throughout the day, by taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or by parking farther away from the entrance of the store, to name a few. A pedometer can help you stay on track, and you can find a basic style for less than twenty dollars.
