There's loads of great stuff out there to enhance your physical and spiritual health. Every two weeks, All Spirit Fitness brings you something we've found useful. Sometimes it's a brand new fitness tool, sometimes it's an everyday item that you can find at the store. Whatever it is, rest assured that if it's on this page, we think it's great! HempIt's time for hemp to return to the mainstream. For a number of years now, it has hovered
on the fringes of respectability, which is actually better than its position for half of the 1900s,
when it was associated with illicit drug use and was an outright illegal crop. Even today hemp cannot
be grown freely in the United States, even though it's impossible to get high off the same plant that
is grown for such commercial uses as textiles, body care, paper and edible seeds. Instead of being
shunned, hemp should be revered because in these ecologically challenged times we need this economical,
easily sustainable and biodegradable crop.
Hemp use goes back many thousands of years in Asia, and it was a very important crop in the colonial days of the United States. Did you know that the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were written on hemp paper? Hemp only became illegal in the late 1930s, in part to revive the sinking wood industry. Hemp was falsely lumped in with illegal marijuana use in order to stunt its production. Thus one of the most useful plants in existence became crop non grata for many, many years. Slowly, over the past couple of decades hemp has been making a comeback, primarily in the clothing industry. This makes sense, since hemp fiber is far stronger than cotton and it can be grown in all climates, hot and cold, with much less water than cotton crops require. As a food, hemp is an excellent source of vegetable protein and essential fatty acids. The oil is great for skin care because it's one of the few natural oils that contains gamma linoleic acids. Making paper from hemp could save billions of trees every year. Hemp can even be made into fuel and a lightweight form of concrete. The possibilities of hemp production are endless - the one thing it won't do is get you high - that's a different type of marijuana altogether. No matter how you feel about marijuana as a drug, hemp's usefulness cannot be denied. We urge you to support this worthy crop by wearing or using it every chance you get.
