Nowadays you can find nearly any kind of fruit at any time of year, but there was a
time before technology and overnight shipping when certain fruits were only available at certain times
of the year. Blueberries, strawberries and grapes were a treat because they were only available for a
few weeks or a single season. This is still true of certain fruits such as peaches and plums, because
they don't travel well over long distances, although if you're willing to pay inflated prices, you can
still get them off-season. But admit it - don't most fruits taste better in the season they're normally
found? There's something special about strawberries in June that September strawberries lack. And there's
nothing like a juicy, red apple that's been kissed by the first frost. Oranges brighten up winter;
cherries are sweetest in summer.
You should have a couple of pieces of fruit every day, along with your 3-5 servings of vegetables. Everyone has his or her favorites, but make sure you take advantage of the season and choose some fruit that's at its peak.
