There's loads of great stuff out there to enhance your physical and spiritual health. Every two weeks, All Spirit Fitness brings you something we've found useful. Sometimes it's a brand new fitness tool, sometimes it's an everyday item that you can find at the store. Whatever it is, rest assured that if it's on this page, we think it's great! Breast Cancer Awareness MonthOctober is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but every month should really be devoted to
the prevention and cure of this killer. One of the scariest aspects about breast cancer is that it can
strike any woman, even those who do not seem at risk. A woman is more likely to have breast cancer if
there is a family history of this disease, if she is over 60, if she has remained child-free throughout
her adulthood, or if she suffers from obesity, but the truth is that 70% of women who are diagnosed
with breast cancer have none of these risk factors. Men, of course, can also get breast cancer, but a
far lower percentage of them do. Women are the ones who are more likely to suffer from this disease.
No one knows for sure what causes breast cancer, but the fact that we live in an ever-more chemical-filled, polluted society does not help. Does diet play a factor? Some think so, and suggest that a diet rich in fiber, fish and fresh fruits and vegetables and low in fat may help. In any case, this is a good diet to follow! But the best thing a woman can do is to examine her breasts on a regular basis (three-quarters of all breast growths, both cancerous and benign, are found through self-examination). Women over 40 should get mammograms annually (if you are in a high risk category and under 40, follow your physician's advice on mammograms). Remember that 8 out of 10 breast growths are non-cancerous, so if you feel a lump, don't panic. Just make sure you have your physician check it out. And - just as important - remind your friends to get checked out too! While the death rate from breast cancer declined by 20% in the 1990s, there has been an increase in the incidence of breast cancer, so we've got a long way to go. We all need to be better informed about this disease, and must help in the battle to prevent and cure it. Here is a page of breast cancer faqs from the Jackson Memorial Hospital website.
