We probably don't have to tell you the nutritional benefits of tomatoes —
that they have lots of Vitamin A and C, and that they're especially known for their high lycopene
content. (Lycopenes are powerful antioxidants that have been known to lower the risk of prostrate
cancer.) Perhaps you even know that cooking tomatoes will actually enhance their lycopene content
(great news if you love marinara sauce!). So it's a given that tomatoes are good, but what you may
not realize is how much better they are when they're home grown!
There are a lot of reasons to grow your own tomatoes. Let's start off with the best one —
they taste great! There is no comparison between a supermarket tomato and one that has been
vine-ripened and freshly picked in your own backyard. In addition to tasting better, your
vine-ripened tomato is also more nutritious. That's because supermarket tomatoes are picked before
they've had a chance to ripen properly, and that affects their nutritional content. And, providing
you don't spray poisonous pesticides all over your crop or use chemical fertilizers, the tomatoes you
grow are organic. (Gardens Alive has some great organic fertilizers and pesticides.)
There are dozens of varieties of tomato seeds — big, beefy tomatoes, luscious Romas,
sweet, tasty cherry tomatoes, and more are available as seeds or
as seedlings.
In fact, there's a better selection offered for your garden than you'll find at the market. Tomatoes
are relatively easy to grow, and if you don't have room in your yard (or if you don't have a yard at
all), you can grow them in containers. And by the way, botanically speaking, the tomato is a fruit. Legally speaking, however, it is a vegetable — a famous 1893 U.S. Supreme court case declared them as such. And you thought you knew everything about tomatoes, didn't you?
