Once only seen in physical therapy or elite athletic training, foam rollers are
starting to make their way to the homes of every day exercisers. There's a good reason for this —
massaging with foam rollers can help make the most of your recovery between workouts.
How do foam rollers help recovery? Here is an explanation in layperson's terms: tight, sore muscles are often caused by restricted fascia (the soft tissue that surrounds muscles, blood vessels and nerves). Using the foam roller to massage stiff areas will help to free up the fascia, improve blood flow and increase flexibility. Muscle tension is relieved and your posture will improve.
Foam rollers also make great tools for core trainig and developing balance, since they create an unstable surface to add an extra challenge to many exercises. Here are a few simple core exercises using the foam roller. Remember to hold in your core and be careful — some of these moves are tougher than they appear!
