Post-Workout Yoga Stretches:
Why Not Stretch With the Best?

There are many ways in which yoga can become part of an overall plan for fitness. Cross training is important for overall health - cardio and aerobic activity benefit your heart and burn calories; weight training builds muscle and strengthens bones; sports add a social element. Yoga is a great addition to these activities because it's a stress buster, it increases energy and it makes the body more flexible and supple. When you're not into heavy-duty exertion - maybe you had a long run or put in an intense strength training session the day before - that's a good time to fit in a yoga class. This is the time when yoga can really lift your mind, body and spirit. But yoga doesn't have to be a stand-alone exercise, and you don't have to wait for a class to enjoy some of its benefits. Many yoga postures can be done at any time, and some adapt especially well to a post-workout stretch routine.

You do stretch after cardio and strength training, right? It is a cardinal fitness sin to skip stretching after a workout. If you want to promote stiffness, invite injury and lengthen your recovery time, you can do all that by not stretching the moment you finish your exercise routine and just head right back to your desk or the couch. Not only is stretching necessary to get the most out of your workout, it feels great. To make it feel even better, add yoga. You should already be breathing through your stretches and yoga reminds you to do that. Try adding some of the following poses to your stretching routine to give your body an extra added treat - just remember to perform them on a mat or a non-slip surface, and modify them to fit your level of fitness and flexibility.
