How to Find Simplicity in a Complicated World
Page 1: Yes, It Can Be Done!

Life today seems more complicated than it used to be. In addition to all our daily responsibilities, we have email and the Internet adding to our workload, more cars on the road, more laws and restrictions and even more cable television channels than ever before. Because of all these extra concerns, we often feel pressed for time - our proliferation of kitchen gadgets, microwaves and prepared foods are just a few of the signs that we feel the need to get things done more quickly than we used to. It's easy for life to become one big rush. It flashes before your eyes, makes your head spin and the only respite is the few hours of sleep you get (and they're probably less than your ancestors were getting - who has time to get in a full eight hours?).

(Article continued below.)

There is so much to worry about, so much visual stimuli hitting you every moment of the day - it's stressful even thinking about it. Talking about simplicity under these conditions almost seems ludicrous, doesn't it? But if you really want a full (as in fulfilling) life, simplicity is the one thing that will give it to you. But how can you find simplicity in a complicated world? It's, well, simple!

The truth is, our lives aren't all that different from our ancestors'. Think about it - what are our needs? Food and shelter. What are we searching for? Happiness for ourselves and those close to us. Is that any different now than it was a hundred or a thousand years ago? Yes, the tools are different - we earn our living with computers and computer-driven devices instead of a bow and arrow or a hand plow - but the essence is exactly the same. That's the first lesson in simplicity - don't confuse the essence with the process.

One of our problems in this day in age is that we are constantly getting so wrapped up in the processes - micromanaging all the little details at work and at home - that we forget why we're doing them in the first place. As a result we get bogged down with frustration, resentments and worries. When this happens, we're forgetting why we're doing what we're doing in the first place. We're also forgetting our center, who we really are underneath all the roles and titles (titles meaning anything from VP to secretary to stay-at-home mom - underneath all that, you are still you). When we keep ourselves centered and remember the essence of why we're in the midst of any given task or chore, the process becomes a lot more pleasant and a lot less complicated. Things become simpler.
