The Yoga Pose Less Traveled:
Four Lesser-Known Yoga Postures Worth Your Time

Mouvement de Dance, 1910
Buy this poster at Art.com

There are certain Yoga poses that are a part of everyone's regular practice. After all, what would a Yoga session be without Downward Facing Dog or Warrior I and II? We all know and love Triangle and Bridge and most of us practice Sun Salutations. But there are other poses that are practiced less often, that you probably only see in class occasionally. People usually forget about them when they practice at home, but they shouldn't - these less-practiced postures add variety to your Yoga routine and work your body and mind a bit differently than those more common poses. In Yoga, just like anything else, variety is important. We need to concentrate on different aspects of ourselves now and again, or focus on ourselves in a different way to fully grow and maintain balance. On a very practical level, changing up your routine helps you avoid boredom and keeps your body challenged.
(Article continued below.)

You are most likely familiar with the following four postures. Chances are, however, that they are not poses you do regularly. Although none of them are advanced, perhaps they're a bit challenging for you - and if that's the case, you definitely should spend time with them! You probably need them. If you are not familiar with these poses, have your instructor show you the proper form. Any - or all - of them are nice additions to your practice. A couple of them make good stretches any time, especially after a non-Yoga exercise workout. Others require more time and concentration. In any case, if you look over these poses and say, "Oh yeah, that one!" and add it to your next session, then we've done our job.
