Admittedly, Adrianne is not your typical pregnant woman. "My first trimester, I didn't have a single
sweet," she says. "No candy, no chocolate, no pastries, no cake, no anything - and it was around the
holiday season!" But the health of Adrianne's baby-to-be came first and, as she notes, the first
trimester "is the most important in terms of nutrition - initial nutrition." But sweets have never
been a big part of her diet anyway. "When I say something sweet, I don't even mean junk food. I mean
frozen yogurt, or a Fruit A Freeze
with chocolate covering."
(Article continued below.)
Adrianne, a Los Angeles-based entertainment journalist and screenwriter, has always been health conscious and she loves exercise. "I think it runs in my family," she explains. "I have an uncle who's seventy and he's still on the ski patrol up in New York state, and he either runs or bikes every day." Her passion for exercise began with her uncle and has carried into her adult life. "I love it when you're sweating from a really good workout," she says. "I love the way I feel mentally and physically. I mean, all around it's a wonderful experience." She added Yoga to her hiking, biking and step aerobic workouts about seven years ago. One day her husband Paul brought home the video tape, Ali McGraw - Yoga Mind & Body. Neither of them were Ali McGraw fans, but they liked Erich Schiffmann, the tape's instructor. "We were doing the Tree Pose and looking out at the lemon tree in the back," she remembers, "and he's talking about, 'Trees sway. Don't worry if you're swaying - trees sway.' And we're swaying, losing our balance and laughing! We felt like total spazzes at first!" One of the the tape's advantages was that Schiffmann gave instructions on how to do Ujjayi breathing. The breathing technique has served Adrianne well - she not only uses it during Yoga class, but it has come in handy several times when she has been in pain. Eventually both Adrianne and Paul branched out from the video tape and began taking classes. They also worked on starting a family. They became the proud parents of two German Shepherds, but having a baby took more work. Eventually, however, Adrianne did become pregnant and the couple is currently preparing for the Big Event, which is due to take place in August. As of this writing Adrianne is 33 weeks pregnant - a little over eight months - and while this has slowed her down a bit, she's still more active than your average, everyday, non-pregnant American. A couple of weeks ago, she swam for a mile and took a Pre-Natal Yoga class for an hour and a half. The next day she went hiking. She took a couple of days off - "I've got to rest more than usual," she says - and then she picked up again and did an exercise video. But frankly, she's not all that impressed with pre-natal aerobics. "The heart beat should not go over a hundred and forty when you're pregnant and exercising," she says, and that rules out Step. And besides, the idea of gentle aerobics doesn't make sense to her - "It's all or nothing for me. If I can't really get a workout out of it, what's the point?"
