Kid Yoga
Chaz Rough Approaches Yoga with a Child's Eyes

Chaz and Noah Do you think your kid would never settle down long enough to do Yoga? Then you probably haven't experienced a Yoga class for children. Take Chaz Rough's sessions, for example. Kids hold egg shakers and jump around like kangaroos. They bark while in Downward Facing Dog. Chaz tells them stories and plays his guitar. Parents get to loosen up and do a few Asanas themselves. "My class is silly, fun, and interactive," he says. "At the end, each kid is relaxed in Corpse Pose, quiet as a church mouse."

(Article continued below.)

Based out of Louisville, Kentucky, Chaz is a singer-songwriter, graphic design artist and Yoga teacher. He has performed at the White House and taken part in the International Children's Peace Festival at the Sivananda Yoga Camp in Montreal. Yoga was a revelation for Chaz, and after practicing it for seven years, he designed a program for kids. "I wanted to teach children the beauty and practice of Yoga," he relates.

Not surprisingly, Chaz's son Noah (pictured with him on the left) has been an inspiration. Combining Yoga and playtime comes naturally for these two: "When I practice at home with Noah, he crawls under me during Bridge Pose while making the sound of a boat - toot, toot! This always brings a smile to my face and brings me to the present, which is the goal of practicing Yoga."

It's not hard to introduce children to Yoga when you've got a sense of wonder and an open mind. According to Chaz, one of the biggest mistakes parents make is being too serious. "Most adults want the child to act calm and quiet like an adult would do in his or her yoga class. A child has a short attention span. They want and need to explore Yoga in a fun-filled manner. Sometimes we forget that a child is just a child and we need to think on their level."
