Tantric Art - Yab-Yum
Yab-Yum
|
|
The imagery of Yab-Yum - the union of a male and female deity - is very complex, and far
more than just sexual in meaning. Yab-Yum, translated, means "father-mother" and is symbolic of the union
between compassion and insight. When the two come together, it creates a third force, which is the key
to enlightenment. At one time Yab-Yum figures were not meant as art or museum pieces. They were only
meant to be viewed by devoted initiates, and contemplated as aspects of the path.

Shiva Shakti

Yab-Yum is spiritual, not erotic, and reminds the aspirant that everything emanates from
the creative force. The three primary forces exist in all religions and philosophies - Brahma, Vishnu,
Shiva; Father, Son, Holy Spirit; Isis, Osiris, Horus; Affirming, Denying Reconciling. When the first two
forces unite, the third force is created and from that all things come into being. Even within seemingly
asexual plants and creatures, the three primary forces are at work.

Although Yab-Yum is not necessarily viewed as sexual, it is a powerful reminder that sex
is sacred, and that love has the ability to transform.
