Weight Workouts 101:
Dumbbells Are for Smart People!

Yeah, yeah, many of you out there are groaning. Maybe the very thought of picking up a dumbbell is unappealing, or perhaps you tried hefting a few weights for a while and the experience left you cold. One of the reasons that mind-body pursuits such as Yoga and Pilates are so popular is that people are searching for strength-building alternatives to weight workouts. But the truth is that nothing builds muscle better than lifting weights. The Yoga pose Chaturanga Dandasana is a struggle for many women; if they spent just a few weeks supplementing their Yoga practice with some upper body weight training, they would be able to easily master the pose - and without growing Arnold Schwarzenegger-sized biceps. Add some weight training to your current fitness routine and you could lose a dress size without even losing pounds. That's one of the magical things about women and weight training - instead of growing bigger, lifting weights has the potential to actually make us shrink!

If you are considering weight training - or if you tried it and hated it, but are willing to give it another chance - there are a few things you should know first.
