Power Yoga for Dummies
by Doug Swenson
2001
Swenson gets you started with a solid foundation. He explains how to choose a mat and a teacher, and defines the muscles locks and breathing that are so integral to the practice. You are started off with some easy poses, Vinyasas and warm ups before the book begins exploring actual routines, which get progressively more challenging. In addition there are chapters that focus on relaxation and meditation, strength, flexibility, endurance, and more. In the Dummies series' classic style, this is a very practical guide to Power Yoga, with detailed instructions, photographs and a glossary. There's even a "cheat sheet" of Power Yoga poses and guides. Power Yoga won't be mastered overnight, so don't expect to perform the most advanced poses in this book anytime soon. But anyone who practices any style of Yoga soon learns that the path is what's important, not necessarily the goal. Swenson shows you how to enhance the quality of your path by understanding that a Power Yoga practice not only works your body but also opens your mind and spirit. He has a chapter on diet and he extols the beauty of taking your Power Yoga out of doors. In addition, he invites you to take the great feelings you get from your Power Yoga practice and spread them around in your behavior towards others. After all, what good is Yoga if you can't give it away, at least in spirit? Other books you may find interesting:
