Conquering Diabetes:
A Cutting-Edge, Comprehensive Program for Prevention and Treatment by Anne Peters, MD
2005
In a friendly, non-technical manner, Dr. Peters offers up a wealth of diabetes information. Included are the facts about Metabolic Syndrome, insulin resistance and carbohydrate-sensitive hypoglycemia — conditions that can lead to diabetes. Dr. Peters explains how to prevent diabetes through developing healthy habits and the proper medication. Type 1 and type 2 diabetes each has its own section, and you may be surprised by some of what you read (did you know that adults can get Type 1 diabetes, and that more children each year are being diagnosed for Type 2?). The information about nutrition, exercise, insulin and medication is extremely helpful. Dr. Peters is very sympathetic to the concerns and needs of the diabetic patient — she understands how difficult it can be to make lifestyle changes and points out that taking simple measures are highly effective (partly because it is easier to stick to them!). She also points out the importance of having a team — finding a nutritionist and endocrinologist are recommended. Conquering Diabetes is a great book for anyone who is concerned about diabetes or prediabetes. Dr. Peters is clearly passionate about diabetes prevention and treatment, and she is one of those truly special doctors who actually encourage patients to go out and do their own research and find out as much as they can about their disease. With an all-encompassing illness like diabetes, it's important to have a full understanding of what it is, what it does to you, and how you can avoid or treat it. This book is an excellent starting point. Other books you may want to check out:
